Scalp Acne

Acne is a very common problem and one that gets plenty of attention, not the least of which is the explosion of acne products that are sold to teenagers each year to control their skin blemishes. But acne at the scalp line or under the scalp is not nearly as well publicized. But if you are experiencing this kind of acne, it can be just as uncomfortable and just as much cause for concern as any other variety of the disease.

In many cases, the acne that you experience under your scalp can be fairly manageable. If the level of discomfort and spreading is not too severe, you could be able to address it with over the counter topical medications. But as with any regimen of treatment, the key to reducing the scope of the acne in your hair or to eliminate it entirely is consistency in using your treatments until you have achieved success.

One of the reasons that acne in your scalp is more difficult to deal with is the obvious issue of the fact that it is mixed in with your hair. So it is hard to see the acne to determine the extent of the problem. Further, it can be easily spread when you comb or brush your hair which can cause the blemishes to open. And because of the presence of the oils in your hair and perhaps other irritants like hair treatment or spray, it seems the acne has a lot of natural allies that can hinder you in getting it under control.

Along with the use of topical lotions, the home remedy things you can do to eliminate this kind of acne are similar to how other forms of acne are handled. The first two steps are the most important and that is to pay closer attention to your diet and your hygiene especially when it comes to your hair and scalp care. The blemishes of acne can be vastly reduced if you lower the level of fat in your diet and increase the amount of good vitamins that you consume through fruits and vegetables. And while dieting is hard to do because we all truly love our fatty foods, there is nothing like a painful skin condition in your hair to remind you to eat right.

It is always a good start to tune up your diet and do all you can to keep your hair and scalp clean to reduce the oils and dirt that only made the acne worse. And many times these simple measures along with using a nonprescription acne treatment can eliminate the problem entirely. But if the acne under your scalp does not clear up after you attend to the basics as we have discussed, it is always appropriate and smart to go see your dermatologist. He or she can examine the problem and either assure you that there is nothing to worry about or help you take action to eliminate the problem once and for all.
